Full backups without doing a full backup
So, how does Abbackup manage to keep your backup up to date without ever doing another full backup?
Your first backup using Abbackup will write a copy of all the files to CD-R or DVD-R disks.
When you do a second backup, Abbackup first finds all new and changed files and backs them up. This is called an incremental backup and other backup programs usually stop there.
However, your backup disk is not full yet. Abbackup then fills up the rest of the disk with a part of the first backup.
After a few backups, all the files from the first backup are spread over the subsequent backup disks.
Eventually, you get multiple copies of your files spread over many disks, without ever having to sit through a marathon full backup again.
- Easy to Schedule
- Each backup takes roughly the same time, which makes them easy to schedule over a lunch-hour or other regular time slot.
- Security with multiple copies
- You get multiple copies of your data, so even if some disks are damaged or lost, you can still get your files from another backup disk.
- Easy disk management
- Backups are made only to blank disks and disks are never reused, which means there is no confusion over which disk has what backup. Every disk gets a serial number and can be stored in sequence. We recommend storing the disks on a spindle.
- Simple restores
- Restoring your files is straightforward. When doing a restore, Abbackup will always ask for the restore disks in sequence, newest disk first.
